‘American Idol’ Finds Golden Girls In San Francisco

Final audition night has lots of strong female contestants and one standout male in James Durbin.

The “American Idol” train pulled into San Francisco on Wednesday night (February 9) for its final shot at discovering a diamond in the rough in the same city where the show found Adam Lambert two years ago. And, wouldn’t you know it, they found the man who just might prove to be the straight-young-dad version of Lambert in James Durbin, along with a gang of really strong female contenders.

Ukrainian singer and sexy video vixen Inessa Lee, 22, was not one of them, though. She seemed more primed for next American, um, adult entertainer, with her belly dancing, yoga poses and an especially wobbly “All Out of Love” by Air Supply. Steven Tyler was charmed, but even her Betty Boop voice and their shared Eastern European ancestry wasn’t enough to punch a ticket to Hollywood. “Cute, you get 110 percent; but singing … eesh,” Tyler said.

Duffy has been good to a number of auditioners this year, and a song by the Brit did the trick again for raven-haired Tucson, Arizona, dance-studio manager Brittany Mazur, 21, as well, who brought a smile to the panel’s faces with her rich, soulful voice. There were also unanimous yeses for jazzy Lara Johnston and sensitive brawny belter Matthew Nuss, whom Tyler dubbed a “diamond in the rough.”

Stefano Langone had one of those stories “Idol” cannot resist. The unemployed 21-year-old was told he’d never walk again after a horrible car crash, but he rallied and brought his positive energy to Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” nailing his audition thanks to some powerful, if a bit nasally, vocals. “Nice voice, dude, got a little ‘hood up in there … I like that,” Randy Jackson said, praising Langone’s streetwise phrasing. Jennifer Lopez had props for his matinee-idol looks and star quality too.

Big round glasses and LBC attitude got karaoke host Clint Jun Gamboa some attention in the audition room, but it was his high-and-tight, gospel&B-flavored cover of Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire” that put him through. “The notes and the way you sang that song was brilliant,” Tyler said, with Jackson calling Gamboa one of the best auditions of the San Francisco trip.

The night’s signature wackadoodle was unemployed El Paso, Texas, clown Kenneth Berba, who ran into the room wearing a homemade lion outfit that earned him an immediate no. That, of course, set up the obligatory horrible-singer montage, highlighted by a maniac in an incredibly detailed homemade Transformer costume that blew the judges away more than his silly try at “Born to be Wild.”

Not easily impressed by other people’s footwear, Lopez loved Julie Zorrilla’s golden shoes. The 20-year-old student comes from a well-heeled family that left Colombia to escape shakedowns from the nation’s guerrilla fighters in the 1990s, and her brilliant smile and upbeat attitude was almost as engaging as her emotionally rich cover of the “Idol” staple “Summertime.” Breathy and leisurely, Zorrilla put plenty of attitude into her take on the “Porgy and Bess” classic.

“Fabulous, beautiful, great range,” Tyler told the alluring beauty. “And great star quality.” Lopez appreciated her confidence, and Jackson liked how she switched up the arrangement.

We’ve had precious few rockers so far this season, and it seemed like long and curly-haired blond belter Dave Combs, 25, might have the stuff. His rough-and-tumble attempt at the Beatles’ “Oh! Darling” just didn’t do it for Tyler (wearing a Beatles T-shirt, no less), who just seemed annoyed at how off the melodic mark Combs was. He was the first of a string of fellas who blew it and got harsh rebukes from the Aerosmith singer.

A week after her house burned down, strawberry-haired free-spirit barista Emily Anne Reed, 26, proved to be plenty cute and fun to look at, but her falsetto attempt at Harry Warren’s jazz tune “You’re Getting to Be a Habit With Me” split the judges. Lopez loved her unique, high and squeaky tone, but Tyler thought the melody left a lot to be desired. Randy disagreed and complimented the unusual tone, which left it up to Lopez, who agreed to give Reed one more shot.

The producers saved a doozy for the final audition spot. The hard-knock story told by James Durbin, 21, was almost too much to believe. He grew up barely knowing his bass-playing dad, who was always on the road, and was raised by his mom after his father died of a drug overdose. Later diagnosed with both Tourette syndrome and Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, Durbin turned to music to help calm his sometimes-rattled nerves.

The unemployed young father with the faux-hawk had everything to prove to the panel, and he immediately grabbed their ears with a wailing, Lambert-esque moon-shot take on Led Zeppelin’s “You Shook Me.” And, in what will likely be another boost to Aerosmith catalog sales, he asked if he could give “Dream On” a shot as well.

Tyler dug it, shaking his head along, his eyes closed as he took in Durbin’s booming, emotion-laden voice. “I like you, I like your voice, my god, what a range,” Randy said. “Wow, that was over the top, wow, that was so, so good,” Tyler added. “You sing from where you’re supposed to sing from, from feeling, from heart, from our soul, from the need to feel and make others feel,” Lopez gushed.

And so it goes. Next stop, Hollywood Week, which kicks off Thursday night, promising much more elation, heartbreak and stress-induced meltdowns.

Snooki’s Best 2010 Grammy Moments, From Justin Bieber To Katy Perry

Snooki is set to return as one of MTV News’ Grammy red-carpet correspondents, getting all the dish from some of the music world’s biggest names. And for the first time, she and co-host Sway will anchor MTV News’ red-carpet live stream from the event. The pair will be seen live on MTV.com for two hours (6-8 p.m. ET), talking to all the night’s big attendees, presenters and performers.

But, before she kicks off the live-stream event this Sunday, MTV News is taking a look back at her greatest moments from last year’s carpet.

Who could forget her memorable chat with Justin Bieber? “Do you watch the show? Are you allowed?” she teased the young star about “Jersey Shore.” “Do you get a lot of, like, girls?” she later inquired. “I think you’re really cute. How would you feel about a blowout? You could make an amazing blowout, like Pauly D’s, with your hair. When you turn 18 or something, call me up.”

Later, when she was with Mario Lopez, she confessed, “He’s my #1 Spanish guido right now!”

Not only did she hit on Bieber and Lopez, she also found a few ladies she thought were pretty hot.

“I think you are gorgeous. Like, I want to make out with you right now,” she told supermodel Marisa Miller. “I don’t know if you’re a lesbian or not.”

Speaking of kissing girls, she and Katy Perry had a funny little exchange on that topic. “Did you really kiss a girl?” she asked the singer. Perry’s response? “Yes, Snooki, but I can’t kiss you anymore, ’cause I’m engaged.”

“I heard,” Snooki told Perry, who is now married to Russell Brand. “He’s really cute. Good job, girl!”

After the stars all made their way inside, Snooks admitted that she’d love to come back. Lucky for everyone, she will once again get her time in the sun. “I would love to do the Grammys again. I think the celebrities loved me, and you saw — they’re screaming at me! They want me!” she said. “So next time you do an awards show with music or celebrities, I should be here, because they’re waiting to look for me.”

Don’t miss “Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys,” a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And stick with us all Grammy night for coverage of the red carpet, the show, the afterparties and beyond!

Lil Wayne’s ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’ Video Premiere Postponed

Finishing touches are still being put on the clip, which was set to debut Thursday on MTV.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Lil Wayne was set to premiere the video for “6 Foot 7 Foot” on MTV this Thursday at 8 p.m. ET during the special presentation “MTV First: Lil Wayne,” but the highly anticipated debut has been postponed as the finishing touches are being put on the video. To tide you over until the premiere, however, here’s a little more from Wayne about how the track came together.

The song is the lead single from Weezy’s forthcoming album, Tha Carter IV, the Cash Money Records superstar’s first project since his release from prison in November. The rollicking track was produced by Bangladesh, who helmed Wayne’s “A Milli” and features the newest Young Money addition Cory Gunz.

The upstart rapper is the progeny of veteran New York rapper Peter Gunz (“Deja Vu”) and an alumnus of XXL‘s noted Freshmen 10 cover in 2009. According to Wayne, he placed Gunz on “6 Foot 7 Foot” to introduce his recent signee since he knew how much attention would be given to his first track. He characterized the strategy as a similar path he took with Drake and Nicki Minaj.

“You know, I put Nicki on the right songs, I put Drake on the right songs; I picked the right song,” Wayne told MTV News. “It makes people pay attention … because I know that people were waiting to see what I’ll say on my first record, my first Lil Wayne record [since getting out of prison]. ‘Cause, of course, I’ve done a bunch of features, and I’m quite sure whoever I did a feature for [before], as soon as I came home they put it out ’cause it got Wayne on here. ‘He just came home, let’s put it out.’ So, I knew people were going to look at my first record like, ‘I want to know what he’s talking about on his first record.’ And, I gave you the jewel at the end. It’s like I’m forcing it on you, you got to hear this. It made everybody who didn’t know Cory Gunz [say], ‘Who is that?’ ”

Gunz, for his part, said when he got the call to join the track, Weezy gave him one simple edict: Attack.

“We went straight to the studio and Tunes [told me], ‘I have something for you to hear,’ and it went from there,” Cory told MTV News in December. “[Wayne said], ‘We gon’ have to attack this.’ As soon as I heard it, it was like instant. Some beats you hear [or] certain songs you hear in a party … and they hit you in a certain kind of way, and that’s kinda what the beat did. So we sat and the record is now getting an amazing response. People been messing with the record, so it’s dope. I’m happy to be here.”

No timetable has been set for the release of the “6 Foot 7 Foot” video, but we will bring you that info as soon as it is available.

Andre 3000 Pops Up On Ke$ha’s ‘Sleazy’ Remix

Outkast MC freshens up the pop star’s Cannibal cut with rare feature.

It seems the only way to find spankin’-new Andre 3000 lyrics these days is on the odd remix, and the ATLien definitely picked a left-of-center choice for his latest feature.

On Friday (January 14), a remix of Ke$ha’s Cannibal track “Sleazy” hit the Web, outfitted with some brand-new bars from the elusive Outkast MC. The southern spitter uses the revamp to muse about a young kid dealing with a deadbeat dad over the song’s bouncy thump.

“We start out so cute in our baby pictures/ That mama shot for our daddy so that he wouldn’t forget you/ He forgot anyway, but hey, one day he’ll remember/ If not, he’s human, I’m human, you human, we’ll forgive him,” he spits.

After sounding off about daddy issues, Stacks then rhymes about his playful relationship with the glitter-friendly poptress.

“I call her Keisha, she like it because it’s hood to her/ She call me Andre 6000 because I’m good to her,” he says.

The remix follows a slew of random guest appearances on records by everyone from DJ Unk to Rich Boy as fans await another full-length release from ‘Dre. Back in 2008, the Love Below lyricist broke down his affinity for jumping on the occasional remix to MTV News, explaining that cooking up another quality solo record is no easy task.

“I’ve been doing remixes here and there, and let me tell you, thank God for remixes. I wanna tell everybody who’s been checking out the remixes and things like the John Legend song [‘Green Light’]: In this day and age, those are the things that have kind of been keeping me alive. Because it takes me awhile to record albums,” he said. “I have to kind of build up something to say.”

What do you think of Andre 3000’s verse on Ke$ha’s “Sleazy” remix? Let us know in the comments!

Lady Gaga didn’t hold back in her “60 Minutes” interview, which is set to air Sunday. During her chat with Anderson Cooper, Gaga opened up about her stage name and revealed that some people still call her by her given name, Stefani.

“Yeah, some people do. Especially in bed,” she said. The New York native laughed off Cooper’s follow-up statement, according to New York’s Daily News.

“You don’t want somebody yelling out ‘Lady Gaga,’ ” Cooper replied.

“No. That would freak me out,” the singer said.

During the interview, Gaga attempted to take Cooper to her old apartment, but things did not go as planned. Gaga tried to enter her former building by pressing all of the buttons, hoping someone would buzz her in. “We’re going to do it the New York way … someone will listen,” she said.

While they did get inside the building, the current tenant in Gaga’s old studio declined to open the door because of the “60 Minutes” camera crew.

The Daily News found the woman now living in the apartment, and she explained why she didn’t let the superstar in. “I had the flu,” Emily Ting told the newspaper. “I didn’t want to have cameras inside. I love Anderson Cooper. He is very handsome. His hair is so gray and wonderful. She’s great. I’ve definitely danced to some of her songs.”

Not only did Gaga and Cooper spend time in the singer’s hometown, they also met up in London for the segment. Gaga’s “60 Minutes” interview airs Sunday at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, right before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards, where she’s set to perform and is up for six awards.
